At Streethouse Primary School we believe that every child is a reader and we equip children with the skills and knowledge to be able to fulfil this by teaching a systematic synthetic phonics approach using The Read Write Inc scheme by Ruth Miskin. Children begin to access the programme when they start in nursery and continue throughout Key Stage 1 and then Key Stage 2 where appropriate.
The programme is taught with fidelity throughout school so that children are able to follow the reading routine with ease and access age appropriate texts and words. The timely and focussed assessment which runs alongside the scheme allows for children to be grouped upon their reading ability to ensure that they are met with the appropriate challenge based on their ability and attainment level.
The Read Write Inc scheme aim is for all children to be fluent and competent readers by the time they are in year 2 however there is both Read Write Inc Comprehension and the Fresh Start programmes which are taught in Key Stage 2 to children who may need additional work and time in order to become fluent and confident readers.
The video clip below explains further;
The Read Write Inc scheme breaks phonemes into 3 sets. Each phoneme has an associated image as you can see below, this then helps children to remember the sounds more clearly. As children progress through the scheme the speed sounds get progressively more difficult and both the new sounds and previously taught sounds make up the composition of the stories and books within each book band.
Children will be sent a link to a familiar pre-read coloured e-book on a Wednesday and will be able to access the book on Oxford Owl until the following week. Children will be sent home with a coloured 'book bag book' in their book bags on a Monday to be returned on the Friday of that week. Please ensure that the books are promptly returned to school so that other children are also able to enjoy the books.
Please see the below progression documents for further details on the different books within the scheme and the age expected progress for sound knowledge and book colour.
