Reading Beyond Phonics

Reading is a priority at Streethouse Primary School as we know how fundamental the skill is in enabling children to access other areas of their learning and the wider curriculum. Getting our children through the reading gateway as soon as possible so that they can become confident and fluent readers is what we strive for and we use a variety of teaching techniques and strategies to enable this to happen.

We want children to become confident readers but we also want to engender a love of reading by ensuring that our reading and writing curriculum is packed with a variety of fantastic age-appropriate books which create a buzz of enthusiasm and excitement.  Explicitly teaching comprehension skills from KS1 and teaching fluency and skills progressively throughout KS2 is helping to develop a reading culture where children can not only succeed but also enjoy the process.

Reading at Home

To support your child in their development of reading, we recommend that you spend at least 10 minutes per day reading with your child.  This can be a combination of you listening to them read their school book in their book bag or their uploaded book on Oxford Owl or them listening to you read a story book.  The sharing of reading is a valuable experience for you and child as it gives you the opportunity to discuss new vocabulary as well as characters, themes and even facts that a range of books can offer.
